With the arrival of the Jewish New Year, it is customary to visit cemeteries to honor our ancestors.

Since 2018, as a collective, we have also visited the medieval Jewish Cemetery on Montjuïc. Although no visible traces remain, we know that beneath our feet, beneath the shrubs and roots, lie members of our extended Jewish family.

​

We gather on this ground as a practice of love for our ancestors and, by extension, for all humanity. Without them, we would not be here.

​

We will remember in particular Miriam, who died in the month of Kislev in the year 4990 (1229 CE), whose gravestone was the only one found during the 2001 archaeological excavation.

​

In 2009, the cemetery was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, and we will renew our commitment to the principle of Kavod HaMet: “to offer the deceased the proper respect and honor,” a millennia-old tradition that was interrupted by the anti-Jewish attacks of 1391, which led to the disappearance of the community.

​

We will conclude the gathering with a chavruta, a form of study in small groups.

​

Through this act, we seek to bring meaning to the site and to weave the spirit of the place once again into the memory and present life of the city.
